Help and Documentation
  • A few things first...

    Selecting language

PhotosDirect is usually displayed in your browser's preset language. However, you can change the language by hovering over the flag in the lower-right corner of the view. A list will open where you can choose from 15 different languages. All texts in PhotosDirect are immediately displayed in the selected new language. You can also open a country-specific PhotosDirect website, for example, by opening photosdirect.de or photosdirect.es. PhotosDirect will then be displayed in the primary language of the country you selected. Country-specific PhotosDirect sites are available in most Western European countries. It is also possible to change the language of the country-specific websites.

    Accepting cookies

Before using PhotosDirect, you should select whether you accept all cookies or only the required ones. We strongly suggest you accept all cookies to get the best experience with PhotosDirect, but it is your choice and PhotosDirect will still work with some restrictions when you select only the required cookies. In case you are in doubt, you should read our Privacy Policy which further explains the collection of personal data and our use of tracking technologies and cookies. Please note that PhotosDirect requires some cookies to work and restricting your browser not to store cookies will prevent PhotosDirect from working properly.

    Contacting support

Our support staff is available to answer any question you may have regarding use of PhotosDirect. We do also appreciate your comments and suggestions.
Most views have a Contact Support button in the lower-right corner of the view. Tap on it or tap the Help button in the lower right corner of the browser window. Both open a dialog box where you can type your name, email address, and message. Images, such as screenshots, can also be attached to the message. Please do not attach your private photos in any message.
You will receive an email confirming that we have received your message and shortly afterwards one of our staff will reply to your message. You can reply to one of these emails if you have any further questions or information about your inquiry.

    Social media

In the center bottom of the PhotosDirect view, you have social media icons that give you the ability to post messages promoting the use of PhotosDirect to your friends and colleagues.

    Geo tagging

PhotosDirect makes use of transferred photo’s geo tagging to show the corresponding street address of the photo’s location if geo tagging data is included in the photo. Geo tagging can be turned on or off on the Camera app on your mobile device by following the steps below. Do notice that this setting will only affect new photos taken on the device. Previously stored photos will keep their geo tagging when transferred and show their street address in PhotosDirect if photos contain location data. Older versions of IOS and Android may have other procedures to change the settings.
    IOS
Open the Settings app and go to Location Services. Scroll down and tap the Camera app. You can then select to use or not use location services with the Camera app.
    Android
Find and tap Settings and select Location. You can then turn on or off Use location or select the Camera and make a more specific choice.

    Saving photos

Part or all of your photo collection can be stored in a ZIP file using the Download Image section's features. In addition, you can save individual photos in the View and edit photos section or in the photo gallery by right-clicking on the image and selecting "Save image as..." from the pop-up menu of your browser. This method of saving is done by the browser and relates to the operating system and installed browser. The feature may differ from this description. Do not use this method with preview images, as these images are displayed at a reduced size, so saving them will not be the full size of the saved image. All images are saved in JPEG format.
Please note that using the browser’s choice to save a link to a photo or copy the image address is not recommended. The saved links will only show photos while you are using PhotosDirect, and photos will be deleted after a given time. Be sure to save the actual photo file to your computer, not just a link to it, if you want to keep the photo.
  • Navigating using the main menu
The main menu is visible on all pages except the sign in page. By selecting entities in this menu, you can open any PhotosDirect function available at your point of use. Several of the entries are duplicates of selections that can be made elsewhere on the PhotosDirect site, but all functions are available at the main menu, some enabled and some disabled depending on your use at the time.

    Process

The Process menu contains options for the various steps for capturing and processing images in an ongoing photo collection.
    New Photo Collection
You don't normally need to use this menu option as a new photo collection is launched when you open PhotosDirect, but it can be used if you want to share your photos among multiple photo collections. Note that the photo collections are deleted after a certain amount of time, depending on user status. Users who are signed in or not signed in, or a paid subscriber, all have different durations for saving a photo collection.
    Current Photo Collection
This menu option easily returns you to your ongoing or opened photo collection if you're on a page that doesn't display your photo collection.
    Stop Collecting from Mobile
Using this menu item, you stop transferring photos to your computer. Please note that ongoing transfers are not always interrupted. All photos do not always appear in the previews of the stopped collection, but will appear when the collection is opened from My Photo Collections in the View menu or when the page refreshes.
    Edit Photos in Collection
This menu item opens the editing section. You can crop, rotate, delete and change the file name of each image.
Download the Photos in the Collection
This menu option opens the Downloads section on the main page where you can combine and save all or some of the images in your collection into a ZIP file. You can also give your collection a description and permanently delete selected images.

    View

The View menu has a few entries linking to various pages.
    My User Account
As a signed in used, you can edit your preferences and settings at this page. See further documentation on this page.
    My Photo Collections
The My Photo Collections page displays all available photo collections with options to open, download, or view. If you select Gelleri, the collection opens in the gallery. The options are accessible via buttons that are visible when you hover over each line. Records show the date and time when the collection was started and last modified, information about the mobile device from which it was collected, the number of photos in the collection, and the time to expiration of the collection. When the collection expires, the collection and all photos are automatically deleted by the system. An opened collection will be indicated by a solid green frame. This will be the current photo collection, and all PhotosDirect features used will be applied to this collection.
The Refresh the list button at the bottom of the page updates the list, which can be useful seeing the status of received photos in an ongoing collection.

    About

Menu option About links to information related to our prices and plans, our company, our terms and conditions and our privacy policy. Contact information can be found in the About Us listing.

    Sign in and Sign out

This entry gives you the options to sign in or out to your account, or to create a new account.
  • Starting a new photo collection
Once you are on the main page, either by opening it directly or by logging in first, you will be shown the QR code that can be scanned to start transferring photos from the mobile. Before the transfer of images can start, you must choose whether you want to accept all cookies or only necessary, and you must accept our terms and conditions. An information icon on the right side of the checkbox can be clicked to see our terms and conditions. Please read this and make sure you understand and agree to the rights, responsibilities, and restrictions that apply to using PhotosDirect before agreeing to the terms and conditions.
If you have created an account, the acceptance of terms and conditions will only be required to answer at first sign in or when terms and conditions are changed.
At the upper right corner of the view is a status light which will have a yellow color indicating PhotosDirect is waiting before terms and conditions are accepted, and after acceptance will become flashing green. The flashing green lamp indicates PhotosDirect is ready and the QR code can be scanned. This indicator will turn steady green when collection photos are ended or red when timed out without photos received.
Scanning the QR code can easily be done with your mobile phone or tablet using the device’s camera or an app installed on the device. Both IOS and Android can be used, and it should be possible to use any internet connected device with a camera and a web browser.
Instructions and status are given in the green bordered box below the QR code.
Scanning with the camera of an IOS or Android device is done the most convenient way by starting the camera app on the device and pointing it towards the QR code. Do not click the camera button at this point, wait a moment for a link to show up in the camera view. This link is usually on a yellow background with black text in IOS devices, and on a black background with white text in Android devices. Tap the link in the camera view and a PhotosDirect mobile webpage will open in the device’s web browser.

    Capture Photos

The Take photos section of your mobile device opens when you open the mobile website with the QR link. It displays a camera button and an information block.
By tapping the Camera button, you open the device’s camera and get a choice to take a photo or select photos from the device’s storage. You select the choice that suits your use now. This way you will be able to take photos by using the camera in the normal way when you are away from your computer, and later transfer up to 32 photos at the time, selected from photos stored om the device. If you select to take a photo or select stored photos, those photos are immediately transferred to the cloud and previews will be visible both in the Preview Photos section on the mobile and in a preview, section replacing the QR code on the computer. It is possible to use the Camera Button several times to add photos to the collection, either from the storage or by taking a new photo. Showing the preview photos on the computer does not require any interaction when the QR code is visible – it will automatically replace the QR code and be updated with new photos as they arrive in the cloud.
Please note that using your device's camera both to scan the QR code and to take photos may seem confusing you. When scanning the QR code - tap on the link in the viewer. When taking photos – press the camera shutter button.
PhotosDirect does only support transfer of files in regular image formats, not videos or any other file types. Unsupported files will be skipped in the transfer process without warning.
If the QR code is scanned and the mobile site opened before terms and conditions are accepted on the computer, you will get a choice to refresh the mobile site after acceptance on the computer.

    Preview Photos

This section gives you a brief preview of the photos captured in the photo collection. The photos shown here have been transferred to the cloud and are available on the computer either in the current photo collection or later, by opening the collection from the View menu selecting My Photo Collections.

    Timeout

You may experience a Reconnect button showing up in the information block below the QR code or the preview of photos on the computer. Click the button to reconnect and view new photos transferred from the mobile device. Photos transferred before reconnecting are still added to the photo collection. If you are not able to reconnect on the computer, the photo collection will be available to open in the specified timeframe from the View menu selecting My Photo Collections.
  • Viewing and editing the photos in a collection
With an active photo collection, either ongoing or opened from the menu, you'll be able to make some simple edits to the collection's photos. Select View and edit the photos on the wizard bar in the middle of the main page.
You will find editing option on the right side of each image.
Clicking a photo will open it in a full-size view in a new browser tab. No editing is available when opened in a new browser tab. This is just to get a full-size view of a single photo. The Gallery, described in another section of the documentation, can be used for a more comprehensive view of all photos in a collection.
These photo editing functions are available:

    Crop photo

When the Crop photo button is clicked, a new pale-yellow section is shown with a Crop button and a Cancel button. At this point, the cursor can be used to select an area in the photo for cropping. Click the Crop button to crop the photo to the selected area or click the Cancel button to cancel and return from cropping. Clicking the Crop photo button on another photo does close the crop section on this photo and opens it on the other photo. No cropping is done unless an area is selected and the Crop button in the pale-yellow section is clicked. The photo will appear in the new format immediately after cropping. You may reverse the cropping by clicking the Undo crop button described below.

    Undo crop

An Undo Crop button is available after cropping, but only until other editing features are applied. Clicking this button will restore the image to its previous size before cropping. When you crop the same image several times, only the last crop can be reversed by clicking this button.

    Rotation

Two buttons are available for rotating the photos clockwise or counterclockwise. The buttons may be clicked several times to turn the photo more than 90 degrees.

    Filename

The filename of the photo from the mobile device is stored and shown in an editable field. You may change the photo’s filename by clicking Save the filename button. The new filename will be given a jpeg extension if it is missing the extension. Changing the file type by changing the extension to something else is not possible, any extension added will just be part of the filename before the jpeg extension. All files are saved in jpeg format in PhotosDirect. You will get a notification if the entered filename contains characters illegal in a filename.

    Street address

The street address where the photo was taken is shown if geo tag data is included with the photo. You may read more about geo tagging and turning location services on or off on your mobile device in a previous section of this documentation. All photos that include location data will be shown with their corresponding street address.

    Delete photo

The photo may be deleted by clicking the Delete button. The view of the photo is then replaced with a small section indicating the photo was deleted and an Undo delete button.

    Undo delete

The Undelete button restores a deleted photo to its previous state. The undo function is only available for a certain amount of time after the delete button is clicked.
  • Downloading photos from a photo collection
Select Download the photos on the right side of the wizard bar in the center of the main page view to view all photos currently in the active or open photo collection. You'll also see the file name, last modified date and time, dimensions in pixels, size in MB, and the street address of the location where the photo was taken that corresponds to the photo geotagging data.
By hovering the mouse over a line, a small window with a preview of the image appears.
Initially all photos are selected by the checked checkbox to the left of each line. By checking or unchecking these boxes, you can select which photos are to be processed by the deletion and download buttons below.

    Description

A multi-line field is available to enter the image collection description. The field is limited to a length of 500 characters. When you save the collection to a .zip file, the beginning of the description is used for the file name of the zip file whose description has been entered. The description is saved with the collection and appears in the collections list in My Photo Collections. This makes it easier to identify each photo collection.

    Delete photos

The gray Delete photos button indicates how many photos are selected for deletion. The button is the first step in the deletion process. When clicking this button, a new and red Permanently delete checked photos button appears for a few seconds. The checked photos will be deleted when this button is clicked. You may press the gray Delete photos button again if the red button disappears too fast. Nothing is deleted before the red button is clicked.

    Download in ZIP file

The green Download photos in a ZIP file button does also indicate the number of photos the ZIP file will contain. You may use the download function with different selections of photos by checking or unchecking photos to split up the collection in various ZIP files depending on your need, like making the ZIP file small enough to be sent as an email attachment. When clicking the button, the selected photos are compressed into a ZIP file together with a readme file describing the content of the ZIP file. The readme file states when the photo collection was created, the description entered in the Description field and a list of filenames of the photos in the ZIP file together with the corresponding addresses of the photo’s locations. If a description is entered, the beginning of it is used as the ZIP file’s filename, otherwise the ZIP files are named PhotosDirectCollection.zip. The file is saved in the download folder of the computer.

    Dimensions and Jpeg compression

The Dimensions drop-down menu provides a percentage reduction of image size in pixels upon download. As an example, an image with dimension 3000x2000 at the choice of 50%, will be downloaded in the zip file in the size of 1500x1000 pixels.
With Jpeg compression , the quality of the images is selected. Higher quality provides less compression and therefore larger file size, while lower quality results in higher file compression and size is reduced.
These selections do not affect the images in the photo collection, only the images downloaded in the zip file. The photo collection retains the full-size images regardless of the selections.
A typical use would be when images are sent as attachments to email and the attachment must be limited in size. First, set the dimension that fits the application. Then a reduced quality is selected that compresses better. A combination of 50% size and medium quality significantly reduces file size and will often produce a good enough result. Of course, this depends on how the images will be used, and it may be convenient to make a few attempts to download with different settings before the best setting is found.
